Open Harmony is the novel open-source base for the new operating system of Huawei with a product name Harmony OS Next. Currently, its active user base is 14 million users with approximately 30 000 apps available on the Huawei App Gallery. ArkUI is the UI programming framework for OHOS and DevEco Studio is the all-integrated developer IDE.

At Huawei, the ArkUI Finland team, together with its colleagues at Huawei R&D China, has delivered key API and framework components for ArkUI, including the frontend for state management and the data-driven UI update logic. Improving the developer experience is the key goal that drives API design and tooling. For this, we have worked together with the creators of DevEco to elevate the ArkUI developer experience to the next level.

We are now looking for an AI-assisted App Development Intern to join the team. This position is part-time with approximately 20 or more hours per week.

Key Responsibilities

You’ll research and analyze existing tools that utilize AI to assist developers in creating interactive UIs and web applications for mobile and embedded devices. You’ll present your findings to the Huawei ArkUI UI framework and DevEco development teams.

Additionally, you’ll create one or several demonstrators where AI assists the developers in building applications for Open Harmony using ArkUI and other frameworks. Based on the feedback, this may involve creating new applications or improving existing ones. You will also explore how AI might help optimize coding style, improve code quality of existing application source code and assist with migrating app source code to newer API versions.

Requirements

• Enrolled in BSc, MSc or PhD studies in Computer Science or related field.
• Extensive exposure to UI software development, either as a hobby, through side projects or from previous student positions.
• Experience with at least one of the following UI frameworks: SwiftUI, Flutter, Jetpack Compose, VueJS, ReactJS, or ReactNative, beyong the basics.
• Experience using generative AI tools to solve programming tasks as a user of such systems.
• Experience applying or training generative AI for problem-solving. This experience can be from university studies, exercises, own projects or past professional work.
• Good communication skills in English.

Internship period and starting date: : This internship will begin as soon as the ideal candidate has been selected and will last 3 – 6 months. The expected start date and duration will be agreed with the selected candidate.
